Getty Images Nativ White Paper on Digital Asset Management for Video

February 6th, 2008

This is an extract from a white paper that we published along with Nativ Ltd in the Journal of DAM October 2007 issue. The paper covered the challenges faced by marketing and production departments with managing video.

Essentially the article takes the position that explosion in video files is creating a new set of issues not faced in the implementation of DAM for imagery or creative artwork files, and that companies need to look beyond the traditional DAM software for a solution. It also explains the elements of Getty Images Media Manager solution that are available to help your build an enterprise video ecosystem.

Key points for people looking at DAM for video include:

  • Learn the language - invest time in understanding the whys and wherefores of video files as they are far more complex than static file formats.
  • Understand metadata needs - So called ‘Standards’ are not univerally accepted and editing tools are still imature.
  • Understand the implications of file size - Video files, especially broadcast quality files are huge and infrastructure is needed to store them.
  • Consider user generated content - because this will likely be a requirement in your business
  • Systems integration is still needed - not one system can provide the entire ecosytem for video
