Today, actress Anna Karina attended a Master Class during the 13th Pusan International Film Festival at Grand Hotel in Busan, South Korea. The biggest film festival in Asia showcases 315 films from 60 countries.

Then, in 1969, Karina was on set shooting Justine, directed by George Cukor and Joseph Strick and she had been divorced from director Jean-Luc Godard for two years.  This seven year romance was accompanied by her participation in at least six of his films, including Une femme est une femme and Pierrot le fou.   Karina had a unenviable childhood, traded by grandparents, foster parents and her mother.  She started her career as an actress and singer in her native Denmark, later moving to Paris at 17 where she befriended Coco Chanel and Pierre Cardin and began modeling.  Karina has always had a bewitching presence on screen and anyone who relishes the modish styles of the mid to late 1960’s will appreciate the bohemian tinged glamour Karina embraces.  Let her filmography guide your vintage inspiration this weekend.  Let her photos take you back now.

Johhny Hallyday may not elicit much of a swoon response to Americans under 50, but to The French, he is an Elvis figure, popular even into the millennium. He is seen these days at age 65, partying with Pamela Anderson, performing to huge crowds, attending fashion shows for the fashion label he co-runs with Christian Audigier and showing support for Nicolas Sarkozy. He has been married more than a couple of times and is the father of smoldering French starlet, Laura Smet. Check out Johnny in his other prime.

Singer/actress Dolly Parton attended the press conference for 9 to 5: The Musical in New York on Wednesday. Parton, wrote the music and lyrics for the musical that will hit the New York stage in 2009. The 1980 screen comedy, starring Parton, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dabney Coleman, will be adapted by the original script writer Resnick and directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello.

Known for her R - Rated physique and G- Rated persona, Parton describes as herself as growing up “dirt poor”, raised in Tennessee with her 11 brothers and sisters. Dolly began her career in music as a child, singing on local Tennessee radio, and broke into the mainstream by writing music for Hank Williams Jr. after receiving encouraging words from Johnny Cash. She enjoyed success through the past four decades, more recently returning to her Bluegrass roots.

Dolly is a successful businesswoman and philanthropist who is involved in multiple ventures to benefit Appalachia, including her theme park, Dollywood. I imagine her foray onto theater will be met with similar enthusiasm. Check out Dolly’s dynamic stage presence and charm here or here.

Where Were They Then? Claudia Cardinale

Claudia Cardinale attended the TF1 party at the 2008 Monte Carlo Television Festival held on June 11, 2008 in Monte Carlo, Principality of Monaco. Royalty of Italian cinema, Cardinale looked modern and breezy in an off-the-shoulder black, satin top and pants. Though she never penetrated the American conscience the way Brigitte Bardot or Sofia Loren has, Cardinale starred in many Italian films of the 1960s. Her face donned early gatefolds of Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde album until she insisted it be removed, since she had never approved it’s use in the first place. She appeared in Fellini’s 8 1/2 and Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West. If you are itching to see a foreign language film this weekend, perhaps you can check out her body of work.  For now, see her in pictures.
