Personal Style: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same Part 1

Trends are overrated. Those who find a “look” and stick to it are few and far between. One who has picked an aesthetic as bold and uncompromising as 1960s model, Peggy Moffitt, for example, is most likely self-assured and committed. Self-imposed limitations on wardrobe or hairstyle can be liberating. It frees us up for other trains of thought. The style-stickers do run the risk becoming cartoons of themselves. Over the next few posts we will be focusing on people who have maintained a strong, unwavering sense of style throughout their life in the public eye.

Denim Watch: Day 10

Katie Holmes debuted a new pair of jeans on her routine walk to rehearsals for All My Sons on Saturday. This pair of late 70’s inspired, high-waisted jeans look elegant on Katie’s frame (20 x better than last weeks pair). The high-waisted backlash to the ultra low rise cuts of the last few years has been met with mixed reviews, some claiming that the higher waist flattens one’s derriere and reminds most people under 40 of their moms. Others argue that the high waist appears to elongate one’s legs. Hilary Duff, Mischa Barton, Kiera Knightly are amongst those who have embraced the trend. Katie has found a pair that fits well, and flatters. What is your call on high-waisted jeans? Check out this lightbox of high-waisted styles, past and present.

Bernie Mac: actor, producer and Original King of Comedy died today, August 9th due to complications from pneumonia in his native city of Chicago. Mac had struggled with health issues on and off since the mid 2000’s due in part to sarcoidosis. He was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease in 1983, but maintained a busy and fruitful career in stand-up, television and movies until his death at the age of 50. Mac garnered two Emmy nominations as one of TV’s most sympathetic dads in The Bernie Mac Show. He told David Letterman in early 2007 that he planned on retiring after completing the comedy; The Whole Truth, Nothing but the Truth, So Help Me Mac. “I’m going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit, I missed a lot of things, you know”. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Rhonda, his daughter Jasmine and his granddaughter. We’ll miss you Bernie Mac.

Josh Brolin and Jessica Biel gabbed at the after party for the 4th Annual Hollyshorts Film Festival presented by h magazine at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. This event is one of the first Brolin has ventured out to after his arrest while wrapping the shoot in Louisiana for the Oliver Stone Bush biopic, W . Biel has also been scarce as of late, recovering from a platinum blond phase and a breakup with Justin Timberlake. Regardless it’s nice to see two actors with some of the best genes in Hollywood out.

The Vicky Cristina Barcelona crew (and Soon-Yi Previn) relaxed at the movie’s premiere after-party at Los Angeles’ W Hotel last night.  Allen’s latest film, set in Spain revolves around an odd love triangle hinged on Javier Bardem’s character.  Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz are the objects of his obsession, and eventually all the pieces fall into place as they find a happy medium in bed (which will undoubtedly satisfy fans of both actresses).  Opens August 15th!

Dunst Downtown

Kirsten Dunst has been spotted below 14th street at least 3 times this week. Here she is in SoHo, New York today. I walked by her on Tuesday around 2:00 pm, on The Bowery!. Or did I? I started to doubt myself.

Very blond hair: check

Porcelain skin: check

About 5′5″ tall: check

Toned legs: check

Cute devil-may-care boho outfit and black shorts (maybe the same ones): check

The sunglasses were different though. They weren’t white Ray-Bans. A Hollywood girl can have more than one pair of sunglasses, I suppose. Right? She wore a green pair last week. Can anyone confirm that Kirsten was wearing black shorts and black wrappy black sunglasses on the 8th of July? I’d like to think I can add her to my top three lunchtime celebrity spottings. Right now I am at Bjork w/baby #1, Tilda Swinton #2, Claire Danes #3. I think she might take Claire’s spot.

Royal Ascot 2008

Royal Ascot, traditionally one of the highlights of both the Social and Royal calendars is naturally also one of the photographic highlights of the year.  For a photographer, the day normally starts with keeping an eye on the gate to the Royal enclosure entrance thus ensuring that any of the important guests don’t slip through the net.  It’s sometimes difficult trying to get something a bit ‘different’ to everyone else, so slipping off for a wander can often provide some more exclusive and creative pictures but at the same time running the risk of missing the action at the front gate! It was on one of these wanders I decided to brave the packed area around the front of the main building next to the racetrack and see if there was anything exciting going on in the Royal Box. Luckily a number of the Royals were up there and I managed to get some nice candid shots of them looking relaxed and behaving as any ‘normal’ family might.

Princess’ Beatrice and Eugenie looked very animated as they cheered on the horses, arms waving in the air and shouting enthusiastically.  Then to the left of the Box was a beaming Zara Philips who ran over to greet her uncle, Prince Charles in an uncharacteristic display of emotion making a great sequence of pictures.  Having captured a lot of the Royal family in the past I know that this type of affection is pretty rare so I ran off to file from the press room in time for next day’s papers (this particular image made the front page of the Daily Mail, Mirror and the Telegraph).

Don’t forget! Father’s Day hits on June 15th this year. If dad lives out of state it’s probably too late to send him a card or gift, but maybe a phone call is in order? Maybe dad taught you how to throw a curve ball, or how to check your oil. Maybe he made you memorize all of the US Presidents and Vice Presidents . Who is your dad? Do you have a Father’s Day ritual?

This year, Angelina Jolie may celebrate Father’s Day with her father, Jon Voight, having recently ended a period of estrangement. Brad Pitt is a father times three, and by this time next year he may be a father to five. Mick Jagger has a huge stable of kids around the globe. It’s always entertaining to witness the legacy famous dads leave, whether it’s that strong chin, golden voice or sense of humor. Check out some of our favorite famous dads with their kids.

Foiled Again

Maybe you have caught on by now that the author is particularly interested in the children of celebrities and doppelgangers. I am focusing today, on two women on the periphery of stardom. Whenever I see Kim Stewart (daughter of Rod Stewart), I am reminded of her resemblance to Chynna Phillips (daughter of John Phillips and Michelle Phillips). The similarities don’t stop at the surface, but don’t run incredibly deep either. Both women were born to famous rockers nearly a decade apart, though Chynna’s gene pool favored musical talent, as both of her parents were in The Mamas And The Papas.

Kim Stewart hasn’t dedicated herself to a particular discipline, as Chynna did in the 1990’s with music, but has taken her mothers path to celebrity via modelling. Stewart has been brutalized by gossip columnists for her questionable appeal, while Chynna has stayed under the radar. Phillips has left the spotlight to raise a family with Billy Baldwin, though she leaves behind the legacy of Wilson Phillips. Kimberly has yet to fulfill her destiny in Hollywood.
