Loosen Up: Lessons From Fashion Week

Your stovepipe jeans feel a little tight don’t they?  I know mine do and it’s not because I’ve had too many cookies from the “snack table”.  I’ve been looking at pages of high-waisted, loose as a goose, slouchy trousers from Fashion Weeks in New York, London and Milan over the past few weeks and anything tight looks passe to my eyes.

For most women, the thought of flowy pants conjures the image a middle-aged healer from Sedona.   My mom called an extreme variety of the loose, dropped crotch pants people wore in the late 80’s: sh_t bag pants.  I’m not sure anyone would endorse MC hammer drop-crotch balloon pants now, but the nuanced “new loose” looks modern, comfortable and even cool.  Designers such as Moschino Cheap & Chic, Jaeger, Blumarine, Paul Smith and Sportmax have banished our perception of breezy silk trousers as matronly.  Will you be opting for more flow this season?  See these breezy pants in action in the spring/summer 2009 collections here.

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 09 flew by faster than ever and the hounds are off to Milan for perhaps the most glamorous of the fashion weeks.  London showed us a good time with color and off kilter elegance.  House of Holland exploded in clashing dots and florals, Eley Kishimoto blocked color with joyful restraint and Luella took a day at the races and turned it up to 11.  We noticed some of the same trends we took note of at Fashion Week NYC: Shine, tangerines, electric blue, jumpsuits and buzzing patterns.  Have a look at our London Hits here.

One Girl’s Trashbag Is Another Girl’s Treasure

Last week Brandy got some flack for wearing a Lanvin dress that resembled a plastic garbage bag to the Conde Nast Media Group’s Fifth Annual Fashion Rocks concert.  Though the dress didn’t come off particularly well, it was in keeping with a recent rash of rubbish-chic displays.  Nicole Richie picked a shiny, black, tulip skirt to wear to the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 09 show, though the fabric was slightly less derivative of a plastic sack and today Australian designers, One Fell Swoop, showed a dress that worked a similar “fresh-from-the-dumpster” vibe during the WA Designer Collections 1 & 2 show.  Click here to see even more trashtasticness.

Snips Heard Around The World

Victoria Beckham attended the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer ‘09 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York with her newly pixied hair.  Mia Farrow made a scene when her long blond hair was shorn by Vidal Sassoon for Rosemary’s Baby in 1968.  The haircut defined Farrow and proved to be an influential hair move.    Michelle Williams, Mena Suvari, Demi Moore, Natalie Portman and Erykah Badu have all undergone drastic crops, whether it was called for by a movie role or the desire for a drastic change.  Check out this lightbox of these actresses before and after their big chop.  Over the past few years, Ms. Posh has been going progressively shorter and the masses have followed.  Will the gamine haircut catch on?

Denim Watch: Day 10

Katie Holmes debuted a new pair of jeans on her routine walk to rehearsals for All My Sons on Saturday. This pair of late 70’s inspired, high-waisted jeans look elegant on Katie’s frame (20 x better than last weeks pair). The high-waisted backlash to the ultra low rise cuts of the last few years has been met with mixed reviews, some claiming that the higher waist flattens one’s derriere and reminds most people under 40 of their moms. Others argue that the high waist appears to elongate one’s legs. Hilary Duff, Mischa Barton, Kiera Knightly are amongst those who have embraced the trend. Katie has found a pair that fits well, and flatters. What is your call on high-waisted jeans? Check out this lightbox of high-waisted styles, past and present.

Lipstick Jungle starlet Leven Rambin wore spring’s omnipresent floral trend to a special screening of The Other Boleyn Girl in New York City. Seen on the spring 2008 runways of Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, and Prada, the look has taken to the red-carpet with Ginnfer Goodwin, Kerry Washington, and Diane Kruger modeling the look. While red colored gowns were a strong presence on the red-carpet, there is one trend that hit two best dressed lists in one: the one-shouldered gown. A lingering trend from 2007, the trend-du-jour was best modeled by Anne Hathaway (in Marchesa) at the 80th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood. Are you still feeling one-shouldered gowns? Yay or nay?

Dots Spotted

Along with more defined silhouettes and a tidy ladylike vibe, that has been swelling for some time, comes the timeless dot. This simple shape has been playing diplomat between rigid geometry and amoebic fluidity for centuries. A pattern once reserved for the Jester, it broke free of it’s comedic association in 19th Century England. A mutable pattern, it is just as at home on a ruffled silk chiffon gown as it is on a cotton shift or even a bikini. The swinging 60’s sang the praises of the polka dot perhaps more than any other era with dots taking on a cartoonish scale from Carnaby Street to the silver screen.

This month Anna Friel (bottom left) wore a gown bearing a striking resemblance to a 1934 dotted design by Lanvin. Recently, spots have been seen on Mischa Barton, Ellen Page, Ione Skye and Whitney Port to name a few. Last night In Las Vegas, Rebecca Romjin popped in a mini, that Roy Lichtenstein would have been proud of, for the Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino opening.

Gellar Takes Our Breath Away

Sarah Michelle Gellar conjured the breezy opulence of Cleopatra in a full-length turquoise and gold Temperley London Resort gown for the premiere of Jieho Lee’s “The Air That I Breathe” at the ArcLight. She emphasized the regal tone of the dress with her choice of warm gold hoops and a clique of delicate gold bangles on her wrist. The “Cleopatra Look” has surfaced throughout time, most notably in the 1960s (below left), influenced by the 1963 epic film starring Elizabeth Taylor (below right). Gellar’s elegant nod to the ancient diva of Egypt is understated, no heavy eye Kohl or bangs are needed.
