Thank God For Voyeurs

Monday, September 15th, 2008

New York Magazine, our neighbors downstairs, wrote a lovely piece on photographer Ron Galella.  Emily Nussbaum asserts that Galella gave birth to modern American celebrity.  We couldn’t agree more!  The depth and breadth Galella’s documentation is stunning and we are honored to represent his work.   From New York City disco culture of the 70’s to the Kennedy family, Galella has earned the title of “the godfather of American paparazzo culture”.  Check out a teeny little sliver of Galella’s contribution to our collection here.

The Vicky Cristina Barcelona crew (and Soon-Yi Previn) relaxed at the movie’s premiere after-party at Los Angeles’ W Hotel last night.  Allen’s latest film, set in Spain revolves around an odd love triangle hinged on Javier Bardem’s character.  Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz are the objects of his obsession, and eventually all the pieces fall into place as they find a happy medium in bed (which will undoubtedly satisfy fans of both actresses).  Opens August 15th!

Them Pipes

What’s cooler than being an A-list actor or supermodel? I don’t know… maybe being a rock star to boot? A number of famous faces have been releasing records or playing in bands this year. Golden girl, Scarlett Johansson’s tribute to Tom Waits; Anywhere I Lay My Head has been met with mixed reviews and a lot of skepticism. British model Agyness Deyn debuted in Five O’Clock Hero’s music video and is said to have written a handful of songs for her new band Gene Jacket. Actress Zooey Deschanel paired up with M. Ward for their project She & Him . Who knew so many actors and pretty faces had pipes to match?

Juliette Lewis has all but made the switch from thumb-sucked actress to sweaty rock goddess. Though we know actress Minnie Driver from the big screen, she actually started her career as a singer, releasing her second album in 2007. Jada Pinkett Smith played the role of the angry tough girl in Wicked Wisdom, performing at Ozzfest in 2006. The thespian to songstress switch is not a new phenomenon. Jane Birken is easily recognized as a singer though she started in acting. Jared Leto, Keanu Reeves, Paris Hilton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Russell Crow and Val Kilmer have also graced our ears with their musical efforts, though with the exception of Leto and Reeves, this dabbling in music feel more like a casual pastime.

Somehow the transition from musician to actor is accepted with greater ease by the public, except perhaps in the case of Madonna. Mark Wahlberg, Will Smith, Bette Midler and Barbara Streisand have successfully turned the corner. Even Bjork. Lyle Lovett and Deborah Harry have done some respectable dramatic work. What do you think? Are these forays into music genuine expressions of the inner songbird or an extension of an actor/model’s inflated ego?

The leading actresess of their generation, Scarlett Johansson (in Oscar de la Renta) and Natalie Portman (in Rodarte) gave double the trouble (or fun, depending on how you look at it) as they attended The Other Boleyn Girl premiere at the 58th Berlinale Film Festival in Germany. Alison Owen, the producer of the film, told W Magazine,“They were like two friends at school,” of the girls quick and close bond on-set. Are you excited to see these ladies as dueling sisters? Discuss!

A platinum blonde and bronzed Scarlett Johansson looked every inch the starlet at the Louis Vuitton Maison in New York City to celebrate the launch of the brand’s “LoVe” collection benefiting Oxfarm America. What Hollywood hunk do you think Scarlett Johansson should show love to next?

Jessica Biel has been charming the hearts of Paris fashion week audiences with her incredible physique and gorgeous face but Miss Biel is not the only style star to walk the mean Parisian streets. In a dress that fit like a glove, Scarlett Johansson made the fashion week entrance at Louis Vuitton fall/ winter 2007-2008 show complete with bouffant hairdo and towering platforms. Is it any wonder she has been asked to do the prestigious Louis Vuitton ad campaign not once but twice?
