Shag - Schmag

Katie Holmes showed off her new bangs backstage at the MTV Movie Awards on June 1st. The new shape hearkens back to the short dos of the mid 1970s. Katie’s new look includes more spiky volume on the front, top and thins out towards the sides. She does not fully commit to the feathery helmet aesthetic that Liza Minnelli has played with for the past 30 years, but she gets awfully close. Florence Henderson familiarized the world with a similar hairstyle as Carol Brady on The Brady Bunch, alternating between a short and long tail as the series matured. Do you vote yay or nay on Katie’s new semi-shag?

Tip: Frosting

I don’t know about you, but I think Gina Gershon’s take on frosted tips is great. Her lightened tips are a few months old, but the volume has been turned up lately. Playful and a little dangerous, the blond does not attempt to masquerade as Gina’s “God given color”, but proudly announces its artifice. Monica Cruz has been working with a subtle version of this look as well, starting with caramel highlights and pushing it lighter and ashier as the months go on.

Farrah Fawcett’s late 70’s carefree beach look may have ignited Frost n’ Tip kit sales for years.   Just when we had thoroughly dismissed the technique along with acid washed denim and high waisted jeans… it may be back and strangely relevant. Yay or nay?

Trophy Hair

Gwyneth Paltrow debuted her shoulder grazing crop at The Prince’s Trust and RBS Celebrate Success Awards on Tuesday. Over the past few years “Paltrow” has almost become synonymous with a cascading mane of golden hair. She could be seen protecting the long swath of blond at the Academy Awards in March.

Recently my friend’s mom said to her; “You really need a haircut, you wear your hair like a trophy”. It takes time, patience and care to keep long hair looking healthy. Why not wear it like a trophy? In Paltrow’s case it also takes a lot of color upkeep, as her hair is double processed blond. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she mentioned that she had Prenatal vitamins to thank for the condition of her enviable locks. Needless to say, I ordered a bottle, as I am sure other women did.

Perhaps a hint of bitterness crept into mom’s “trophy comment” because long hair is usually reserved for the young. As many have noted, a greater number of older women have been wearing their hair “model - long” for the last several years, but as the bob and crop haircuts ushered in by Agyness Deyn, Katie Holmes and Selma Blair are celebrated, the long hair set may be reacting with scissors. Who is next? Check out this lightbox of trophy hair ladies. Can they lose the length and still look great?

To no fault of her own, the always put together Kate Hudson had a hair-raising experience last night at the Los Angeles premiere of Fool’s Gold. No matter how impeccably styled, Kate’s hair person was no match for the 5-10 mile an hour winds that Los Angeles experienced during the red carpet arrivals. Ever the California golden girl, Kate smiled through it all looking flawless as usual.

A chameleon for changing hair color, Ashlee Simpson arrived at the Los Angeles premiere of Cloverfield with a new hue that shocked all. Not all that surprising since the “Outta My Head” singer has ranged from cutesy blond to jet black over the years but the question that remains is why? New album to promote? Perhaps the New Year? Better luck for the Dallas Cowboys? Discuss!

Even with a 2006 Oscar nomination for Junebug, Amy Adams was not quite a marquee name yet but with this year’s family-fare hit Enchanted, Adams sealed herself on the short list for years to come. Not only a talented actress but a budding fashionista as well, Adams looked every inch the movie star in Fendi while attending the New York Film Critic’s Circle Awards in New York City. With a mane of strawberry blonde hair that rivals My Little Pony and charisma to match, this is indeed Miss Adams year.
