Trends are overrated. Those who find a “look” and stick to it are few and far between. One who has picked an aesthetic as bold and uncompromising as 1960s model, Peggy Moffitt, for example, is most likely self-assured and committed. Self-imposed limitations on wardrobe or hairstyle can be liberating. It frees us up for other trains of thought. The style-stickers do run the risk becoming cartoons of themselves. Over the next few posts we will be focusing on people who have maintained a strong, unwavering sense of style throughout their life in the public eye.

Sarah Silverman Shopped At My Table

Sarah Silverman pawed a pair of earrings at a SoHo, New York street vendor’s table on Tuesday afternoon. One wonders if the down to earth comedian was identified as an international celebrity by the vendor. I bet the next time you pass the booth you’ll see a sign that says: “Sarah Silverman shops here”.  Do you shop “on the street”?

Actor and New Kid On The Block, Donnie Wahlberg celebrated his 39th birthday at Jet Nightclub At The Mirage in Las Vegas on August 16th. Just days prior to his pyrotechnic birthday party, he and his wife of nine years, Kim Fey each filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. The newly reformed New Kids On The Block embark on an international tour in the fall.  It will probably be a fun one for Donnie.

Shoes: High Beam Vs. Invisible

All of the girls who showed up to the premiere of The House Bunny in New York City on Monday looked cute, but Emma Stone was exceptionally so wearing a colorful marbleized satiny dress and electric blue patent leather heels. This vivid look has been around the block, but it still has the staying power of true eye candy. Stone’s punchy heels are in stark contrast to the neutral pair of Louboutin’s that Hayden Panettiere wore to the Whaleman Foundation Benefit last week. Though Panettiere’s Barbie flesh patent leather pumps elicited an attraction/repulsion response, my lasting impression is positive. Will extreme neutrality rein for next season?

Suri Cruise and Katie Holmes spent a beautiful Sunday in the West Village, New York City shopping and playing in the park. The weather was great and what better way to enjoy it than by taking turns sliding at the playground and visiting the Parisian children’s store; Bonpoint on Bleeker Street? Suri offered her opinion on a garment or two, tried on mary jane shoes, played with a bevy of stuffed animals and chatted up a very real looking baby doll. Katie was obliging and playful, toting Babar, while Suri mugged for the camera. Check out Suri’s Sunday outing here.

White After Labor Day

As summer comes to a close, we prematurely mourn the loss of white jeans. The wearing of whites has traditionally marked summer, sandwiched in America between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Regions blessed by temperate weather such as the west and deep south tend to eschew the tradition of shelving white shoes and pants after September 1st, but in general we are moving away from such rigid etiquette.

Some claim that bright whites after Labor Day is a maverick, fashion forward move and others have sworn off white jeans for life. You’ve seen them everywhere lately thanks to the 80’s revival. Liz Hurley has been wearing them non-ironically a since the 1990’s. David Hemmings caused a stir when his character wore white jeans with a black belt in 1966’s Blowup, launching a mini white denim trend. Let’s not forget Mick Jagger, who rocked them in The Rolling Stones’ 1981 music video for “Waiting On A Friend”. Enjoy the video as you check out white jeans then and now. Do you dare wear white jeans and will you venture out in them after September 1st?

As Old As The Sands Themselves: Hysterical Fans

Nick and his brother Joe of The Jonas Brothers made a Jonas Brothers sandwich for one lucky fan at TRL studios yesterday. Everyone knows adolescents are capable of many things including being poltergeist magnets . They are also capable of focusing a tremendous amount of energy and imagination on an object of desire. You’ve seen the footage of The Beatles at Shea Stadium. Can you relate to these hysterical fans? I had a locket with Michael Nesmith ’s photo in the 6th grade, but that is as far as it went. Who is your teen obsession?

But She’s Such A Lovely Young Lady

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Jena Malone attended the Los Angeles premiere for Tropic Thunder on Monday night dressed in a characteristically jarring ensemble of a black mini t-shirt dress, cinched with what appears to be a vintage leather enamel belt, and completed with a pair of short combat boots. Malone has been cultivating indie queen stature with roles in The Go Getter, Into The Wild and Donnie Darko. Her red carpet persona and aesthetic reflects her quirky brand of beauty. She is not unlike Chloe Sevigny or Samantha Morton in her approach to dressing; Interesting, eclectic, polarizing and often unflattering. Malone appears to be searching for her personal style as her hair color and cuts have run the gamut. About last nights outfit? I can hear moms everywhere saying: “Why is she doing this? Her hair is too short! And those boots? But she’s such a lovely young lady.” Check out other looks Jena has tried on. Which one wins?
