We Are Star Wars Today

Mary-Kate Olsen attended a screening of The Wackness in New York City ready for battle last night. It was noted by New York Magazine that she appeared jovial at the event, flashing her pearly whites. There was something familiar about her ensemble, a white, silk kimono-esque floor-length gown, cinched with a thick black leather belt. It called to mind the neo-martial arts costume worn by 70’s era Luke Skywalker.

Upon further reflection we realized that Mary-Kate has been given to flights of fancy in the Star Wars vein on more than one occasion. From a full gold encasement at the MET Costume Institute Gala, a la 3CP0 to an organically neutral gown worn to a Calvin Klein show last year Mary-Kate has been either channelling “The Force” or translating late 1970’s fashion milieu along the lines of George Lucas’ vision.

Dolce & Gabbana Go Boating

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Dolce & Gabbana took to the water as they debuted their Spring/Summer 2008 Mens Collection at Milan Fashion Week. Elements of nautical whimsy were incorporated into the majority of the pieces from the casual separates, to silk suiting. Separates were covered in life savers, alphanumeric signal flags, and anchors, while suiting was pieced from polka-dotted and striped silks. The common Maritime pallet of red, white, blue and yellow was abbreviated to include mostly traditional white and navy.

Even one of the most glamorous ensembles, a silver sequined blazer, paired with striped white trousers gestured to rough and ready sailing life by use of a drawstring closure fashioned from a simple navy cord. Stripes were in full effect throughout, though turned on their side this time around. Piping and bow-ties kept the vibe proper and somewhat old fashioned, everything nodding to the sort of traditional summer clothing a gentleman wear with a boater hat.

The nautical theme has always been a safe and timeless choice for designers to reference for summer wear. The maritime look was huge in the 1960’s when geometry reigned in fashion. It’s a posh aesthetic, one that goes hand in hand with tennis sweaters and “preppy”. Though we may not be able to make it to the Cape this summer to take our 100′ sailboat for a spin, but we can dream or at least dress accordingly. Box Office: Mediocre Comedy Wallops Abysmal Comedy

The box office didn’t quite post the spectacular numbers of recent weeks, but the top ten was still comfortably above the comparable weekend in 2007. The weekend’s #1 pic was the big-screen version of retro spy-comedy TV series Get Smart, which opened with a stronger-than-expected $39 million (estimate). The Steve Carell-Anne Hathaway blockbuster received mostly mediocre notices from critics, but fared far better than the weekend’s #4 film - the other wide opener, Mike Myers’s The Love Guru, which seems to be a shoo-in at this point for the Worst Picture Razzie. The expensive tentpole pic tanked with an estimated $14 million.

Holdovers dominated the rest. Kung Fu Panda rose back up to #2, narrowly beating the second weekend of The Incredible Hulk which, unsurprisingly, fell hard after comic nerds descended upon it last weekend. The #5 film was The Happening, which fell almost 70%. M. Night Shyamalan doesn’t quite yet equate to box office poison, but he’s not far off.

Next weekend will be an interesting one to watch. The openers - Wall-E and Wanted - both have strong commercial prospects, and could also be (*gasp*) decent flicks. Wall-E in particular is an interesting gamble - will Charlie Chaplin-style humor translate for today’s ADD-infected kids? I think it will. This is a lush $180 million robot movie after all. My bet is for $65 million. Incredibles numbers.

RIP George Carlin

Comic George Carlin of “Seven Dirty Words” fame passed away on Sunday, June 22 of apparent heart failure after complaining of chest pains at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. He was 71 years old.

Carlin recently ranked second on Comedy Central’s ten best stand-ups of all time, just behind Richard Pryor, another great comic who understood the semantic power of filthy words. But Carlin’s work was notable - and unique - not just for a barrage of naughtiness. His mixture of taboo subjects with trenchant political commentary made him one of the few American comedians to leave audiences crying with laughter and pondering the contradictions of modern society at the same time. A true legend, Carlin’s death will leave an indelible mark on the comedy world. We can only hope that the revived attention given to his career will inspire younger comedians to be as bold.

Not Your Mother’s Halter

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Rachel Bilson (left) came to The Whitney Contemporaries Art Party in New York last night, bandaged in a champagne halter mini-dress by Herve Leger. It’s possible we have never seen this much of Rachel in public before and while the amazing dress hugs every curve and bares a fair share, it is still a tasteful and classic choice. What else would we expect of a woman who has a strong track record for regret-less ensembles? Bilson gravitates towards clean lines and neutral colors and this dress is certainly in keeping with her taste.

Halter dresses are a staple of summer wear, but this minimalist, body hugging variety brings to mind the pared down, body-conscious dresses of the mid-1990’s. Sex kitten, Angie Dickinson poses in 1961’s hot halter number (right). Do you like the body bearing Bilson?

Royal Ascot 2008

Royal Ascot, traditionally one of the highlights of both the Social and Royal calendars is naturally also one of the photographic highlights of the year.  For a photographer, the day normally starts with keeping an eye on the gate to the Royal enclosure entrance thus ensuring that any of the important guests don’t slip through the net.  It’s sometimes difficult trying to get something a bit ‘different’ to everyone else, so slipping off for a wander can often provide some more exclusive and creative pictures but at the same time running the risk of missing the action at the front gate! It was on one of these wanders I decided to brave the packed area around the front of the main building next to the racetrack and see if there was anything exciting going on in the Royal Box. Luckily a number of the Royals were up there and I managed to get some nice candid shots of them looking relaxed and behaving as any ‘normal’ family might.

Princess’ Beatrice and Eugenie looked very animated as they cheered on the horses, arms waving in the air and shouting enthusiastically.  Then to the left of the Box was a beaming Zara Philips who ran over to greet her uncle, Prince Charles in an uncharacteristic display of emotion making a great sequence of pictures.  Having captured a lot of the Royal family in the past I know that this type of affection is pretty rare so I ran off to file from the press room in time for next day’s papers (this particular image made the front page of the Daily Mail, Mirror and the Telegraph).

Box Office: Hulk Smash At The Ticket Booth

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

A movie starring Edward Norton as an angry green giant who says stuff like “HULK! SMASH!” soared to the top of the U.S. box office this weekend, with an opening take of $55.4 million. The Louis Leterrier-directed blockbuster is a virtual re-boot of Marvel’s lucrative “Hulk” franchise, which disappointed in its first cinematic outing in 2003 after a mauling by critics and audiences. The Incredible Hulk didn’t open quite as big as Hulk, but it might end up with more bank in the end - word-of-mouth for Ang Lee’s Hulk was atrocious, leading to embarrassing drop-offs. All in all, this was a successful re-try, even if the movie itself is a bit bland.

M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening opened in third with an impressive $30.5 million, proving to naysayers that his name on the marquee can still open a thriller. You can expect a massive second-weekend drop though. Audiences are hating the film, as are their critical counterparts. Still, it’s certainly not as big of a disaster as Lady in the Water.

Kung Fu Panda held up nicely for second place. Its $33.6 million weekend puts it at $117 million overall. The toon is currently running at the same pace as Pixar’s Cars. If lucky, Dreamworks could be looking at a $250 million final tally in the States.

For the third weekend in a row, the box office was red hot overall, and once again crushed year-ago levels. June 2008 will easily one of the strongest summer months in history, and should even the year out after a disappointing May (Speed Racer, Narnia) and the general slump leading in to the summer. Next weekend: The Love Guru and Get Smart. More $$ fireworks from mediocre movies!

Don’t forget! Father’s Day hits on June 15th this year. If dad lives out of state it’s probably too late to send him a card or gift, but maybe a phone call is in order? Maybe dad taught you how to throw a curve ball, or how to check your oil. Maybe he made you memorize all of the US Presidents and Vice Presidents . Who is your dad? Do you have a Father’s Day ritual?

This year, Angelina Jolie may celebrate Father’s Day with her father, Jon Voight, having recently ended a period of estrangement. Brad Pitt is a father times three, and by this time next year he may be a father to five. Mick Jagger has a huge stable of kids around the globe. It’s always entertaining to witness the legacy famous dads leave, whether it’s that strong chin, golden voice or sense of humor. Check out some of our favorite famous dads with their kids.
