Bona fide hottie Emile Hirsch accepted the award for Best Feature for Sean Penn’s moving film “Into the Wild” at the 17th Annual Gotham Awards in New York City. This early awards show honors the best of the year’s independent features. Director Penn was not in attendance - Hirsch accepted the award along with producer William Pohlad.

The intrepid Nikke Finke over at Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that a back-door source indicates the Writer’s Guild strike may be ending sooner than expected. More than likely not before Christmas, but this is good news nonetheless - more weeks without 30 Rock and someone will have to pay, Death Wish-style.

With Hollywood on strike and the box office plummeting, analysts were bracing for one of the worst Thanksgiving showings in history. But you can’t keep bored families away at the holidays, apparently. The Thanksgiving box office met last year’s numbers to everyone’s surprise, fuelled by the muscular #1 bow of Disney’s Enchanted and the eye-opening results of second place finisher This Christmas. Once again showing how Hollywood is clueless about the power of African-American audiences, the family dramedy raked in a terrific $27.1 million over the 5-day holiday frame. Beowulf continued to disappoint (it may not reach $100 million), while Hitman opened to decent numbers for a video game adaptation and Miramax’s No Country for Old Men held up well in national release. Todd Haynes’s mega-hyped Bob Dylan fantasia I’m Not There was solid in its first days of limited release, if a bit underwhelming.

Dr. Jan Adams, the plastic surgeon who operated on Kanye West’s mother, Donda West, the day before she died left the set of Larry King Live abruptly in respect to the West family. Adams began the program by stating, “I had come here to talk about things in the press that aren’t accurate about me…but I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for the West family. They asked me not to go on.” During the program, it was revealed that Adams had received a letter from the West family’s lawyers asking him not to appear on the show – and threatening to ask the Medical Board of California to decertify him if he spoke about the case. “When they are comfortable, then I will be comfortable [speaking out],” Adams elaborated to King. “If they are never comfortable, then I will never be comfortable.” The doctor then removed his ear piece and walked off stage while the program immediately cut to a commercial break. Getty Images caught the controversial doctor leaving the studio with a large travel bag in tow. What do you think about Dr. West’s abrupt departure?
