Designers Richie Rich, retired adult film actress Jenna Jameson, model Lydia Hearst, and Traver Rains took their final bow at the Heatherette spring 2008 fashion show during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week held at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, California. Heatherette created an entirely new collection for their West Coast fans, inspired by an imaginary drive from New York to California. What did they find when arrived to la-la land? Malibu Barbie come to life complete with grease stained, oiled-up mechanics who can attend to every Hollywood, red-carpet divas needs whether she be in a tinie-weenie bikini, beach-ball dress, or in need of hair wash like Hearst, who left a cloud of fairy dust trailing in her wake.

For spring 2008, Kevan Hall was inspired by Africa. There were the standard African references such as safari jackets, fabulous embroidered dashikis, and eveningwear that featured beaded corsets and tortoise rings but it was his sheaths—made of raw silk and nomadic mud cloth—where Hall demonstrated his real strength in understatement at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week held at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, California. The look(s) would be equally at home in the city as they would be on holiday.

A familiar character paid a visit to the spring/summer 2008 runways at Paris Fashion Week, earlier in October. Harlequin was back. It is said that the length of hemlines predicts the markets rise or fall but what does a nod to comedy reflect if not simply an embrace of geometry? Harlequin and his counterpart Pierrot are characters from commedia dell’arte, a theatrical tradition with origins in 15th century Italy. The two characters are clowns with contrasting natures. Pierrot is naive and melancholy, while Harlequin is a nimble trickster.
Viktor & Rolf amplified the aesthetics of both Pierrot and Harlequin in their
Harlequin tinged fashion pops up every now and again, most recognizably in the mod 1960s, but the 1980s hosted its share of appearances by the merrymaker. Two decades ago, both Vivienne Westwood and Gianfranco Ferre for Christian Dior (below left) incorporated harlequin-ism into their collections.
