It was a bohemian bourgeois paradise at the spring 2008 Tart fashion show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, California. The lightest cottons were turned into glamorous dresses—both day and evening—that featured twisted halters, gathered busts, and flower details. The effortless looks took a more creative turn in the form of high-waisted harem pants paired with a bandeau top and turban, as seen above.

Up-and-coming socialite Olivia Palermo wore a $2 dollar dress she found at the Salvation Army to A Night In New Orleans benefit for Habitat for Humanity at Stone Rose Time Warner Center in New York City. The well-photographed girl-about-town can surely have her pick of any designer dress to wear but she said of her unlikely ensemble choice, “It’s so funny. No one believes me that the dress was literally $2 dollars. Everyone thought it was designer!” Kudos for originality Olivia!

One of the more intellectual shows at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, Grey Ant showed a collection that was everything LA fashion could and should be for spring 2008. Designer Grant Krajecki, the vision behind Grey Ant, showed modern cuts such as ultra high-waisted pants paired with bra tops, oversize tie-dye tunics over tiny shorts, and easy summer dresses in light gauzy fabrics that would look at home (and chic) anywhere with a warm climate. Aside from direction styling tricks, there were very wearable looks like this black body-conscious strapless dress complete with oversize red wayfarers and monster heels. The show took place in Culver City, California.

The Whitley Kros label debuted at at Smashbox Studios for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Los Angeles on Tuesday with bold color combinations and an air of rock n’ roll cool. The collection showed restrained edginess and efficient use of a punchy palette against neutrals. Shapes were simple and easy, with volume coming mainly from the drape of lovely lightweight over-sized tops and caftans. Thick stripes, electric tartan and a vibrant mosaic graphics broke up fields of color and naive appliques added whimsy. The “cool” element might come from the new-wave feel of the pieces. Late 1970s era Debbie Harry (below right) was reincarnated on the runway. The team behind the label, Sophie Coloma and Marissa Ribisi enjoyed the attendance of several celebrity guests including Ribisi’s musician husband Beck, actors Jason Lee, and Jaime Pressly. Actor Giovanni Ribisi supported his sister from the front row along with Juliette Lewis (below left). One outfit, a short dress paired with a flowing over-sized jacket and braided headband conjured a look that one might expect Lewis, the actress turned rocker, to wear.
